Sravasti Datta discusses the complexities of romantic relationships, which are difficult to explain for humans. Theatre personality Shatarupa Bhattacharyya brings this theme to light in her latest Hindi play, Silvatein, being performed at Ranga Shankara today. Translated by Puneet Gupta, Shatarupa, with a decade of theatre experience in 20 productions, holds roles as an actor, director, and production manager. While she collaborates with other theatre groups in Bengaluru, she shares insights on her creative process in writing plays, her theatrical learning journey, and reflections on modern relationships. Theatre provides her a platform to delve into issues intellectually and emotionally. Shatarupa explains how theatre has helped her navigate relationships by offering a space where abstract ideas come to life in a more tangible way. The cathartic process of dramatizing these issues enables her to explore them intellectually and emotionally, as well as develop characters and conflicts based on shared thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Writing, staging, and witnessing Silvatein's performance has been a transformative experience for Shatarupa, offering closure and initiating conversations to inspire others. Theatre facilitates a dialogue that transcends mere facts and figures. She notes that the fast-paced nature of modern life leaves little room for emotional connections, with stress often affecting relationships by making individuals more impatient and emotionally distant. Technology, while enhancing communication, also introduces distractions, fueling the belief that relationships should be easy and always fulfilling. Shatarupa highlights the importance of investing time and effort in nurturing relationships beyond instant gratification. The energy required to solve problems has dwindled, leading many to choose the easier path of walking away or giving up. Our fast-paced lives leave little space for genuine emotional connections, prioritizing tasks over nurturing relationships. Shatarupa's recent play draws from her own experiences with failed relationships, highlighting the detrimental effects of power and control. Through self-reflection and open communication, she realized the importance of understanding her own emotions, triggers, and needs for personal well-being and successful relationships. By acknowledging how past experiences influenced her reactions, Shatarupa learned to approach relationships with patience and empathy, embracing vulnerability and embracing opportunities for growth.
